  Derek Johnson, Marin County Executive

Derek Johnson, a Novato native, serves as Marin County's Chief Executive Officer. With over 25 years of experience in local government management, Derek was appointed to lead the County's approximately $783 million budget and workforce of more than 3,000 workers. His leadership focuses on advancing the Board of Supervisors objectives, including housing and homelessness, climate sustainability, fiscal management, and equitable services.

 

Derek's career is marked by his approach to public service and community development. Before joining Marin County, he dedicated 12 years to the City of San Luis Obispo, serving as City Manager, Assistant City Manager, and Director of Community Development. During his tenure, Derek spearheaded significant infrastructure projects, fostered financial sustainability, and led urban development initiatives that have left a lasting positive impact on the community.

 

Derek's strategic vision and innovative mindset have consistently driven his success. His previous roles include serving as the Director of the Office of Long-Range Planning in Santa Barbara County and General Manager of Parks and Recreation in Goleta, CA. His expertise in infrastructure financing, redevelopment, and organizational development has been pivotal in fostering growth and resilience in the communities he has served.

 

Returning to his roots, Derek is passionately committed to serving the community where he spent his youth. His dedication to Marin County is reflected in his efforts to enhance the quality of life for all residents, promoting sustainable development, and ensuring equitable access to services. Derek currently holds a bachelor's degree in environmental studies from UC Santa Barbara and numerous professional and academic experiences in a wide array of technical areas.
